Controller, Hutch Auto Group

Paintsville, KY
Full Time
Senior Manager/Supervisor
Controller, Hutch Auto Group
Group-Level Role
The Controller serves as Hutch Auto Group's group-level owner of accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls across all three rooftops: Chevy GMC, Ford, and CDJR. This role replaces the current model of three independently run, store-level accounting functions with a single centralized structure: one Controller, one Office Manager, and single dedicated roles for payables, receivables, and titling beneath the Office Manager. The Controller is directly accountable for the accuracy, timeliness, and comparability of financial reporting across the group, for closing existing gaps in journal usage, warranty processing, and expense allocation, and for establishing one standardized, GAAP-compliant accounting process that all three stores follow. Prior experience managing a centralized, multi-rooftop accounting operation for a dealer group is required.

Purpose StatementOwn the accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal control environment across all three Hutch Auto Group rooftops. Replace store-by-store accounting practices with one standardized, group-wide model, one set of numbers ownership can trust, and clear accountability for every core accounting function.
Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the single financial and accounting authority across Chevy GMC, Ford, and CDJR, standardizing journal usage, chart of accounts, and DMS configuration group-wide.
  • Prepare complete, accurate monthly financial statements for each rooftop within manufacturer format and timing requirements; drive consistent month-end close by the 10th across all three stores.
  • Own daily bank reconciliation, cash management, and floor plan payable/payoff oversight for the group.
  • Directly supervise the Office Manager, who oversees Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Accounting Clerk, Title Clerk, and Warranty Administrator, ensuring one clear line of accountability for each function.
  • Calculate and verify commission, bonus, and technician flat-rate pay across all three rooftops.
  • Implement a standardized warranty processing procedure requiring signed contract verification prior to any payment, and oversee resolution of aged or duplicate warranty items.
  • Establish and enforce a consistent, documented policy for allocating shared cross-store expenses (e.g., digital advertising).
  • Hold General Managers accountable for delivering complete, billable, and title-ready deal jackets to accounting on a timely basis.
  • Coordinate the annual audit (or review) and physical inventory across all three rooftops.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and all applicable government finance, payroll tax, and regulatory filing requirements.
  • Lead cross-training of accounting staff across rooftops to support coverage, consistency, and bench strength.
  • Partner with ownership on accounting talent development and succession planning within the department.
Performance Expectations
  • Consistent, on-time month-end close (by the 10th) across all three rooftops.
  • Standardized journal structure and chart of accounts implemented group-wide.
  • Audit-ready books maintained on an ongoing basis.
  • Deal jacket completeness enforced at each store prior to submission to accounting.
  • Accounting staff cross-trained across rooftops to support coverage and succession.
Required Skills
  • Deep working knowledge of dealership financial statements, DMS platforms, floor plan management, and manufacturer reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to build, document, and enforce standardized accounting processes across multiple locations.
  • Strong GAAP and internal-controls knowledge, including bank reconciliation, commission/bonus calculation, and warranty/schedule management.
  • Proven staff supervision, training, and cross-training capability.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present financial information clearly to ownership and store leadership.
  • Proficiency with standard office and accounting software (e.g., Excel, DMS platforms).
Qualifications
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience as a Controller in an automotive dealership setting, required.
  • Demonstrated, hands-on experience managing centralized or multi-rooftop accounting operations for a dealer group — this is a firm requirement, not a preference.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Physical RequirementsAbility to sit or stand for extended periods and to use standard office equipment (computer, phone, calculator) for the majority of the workday. Occasional travel between the three rooftops is required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this role.
